This week we are featuring a common question:

Question: Did the EPA change the lead certification levels for obtaining a lead certification?

Answer:  Yes. The EPA sent out a modification for allowable lead levels.  Basically, the levels have been lowered (making it harder) but keep in mind that if you take the necessary steps per below:

  • Ensure there is no chipping or peeling paint in the rental unit

  • On the windowsills-scrape, prime, and painting windowsills-the area that fails on occasion

If you take these additional steps, the new EPA requirements will not impact you.  The new allowable lead levels (in micrograms per square foot) are below:

On January 7, 2021, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a final rule revising the dust-lead post-abatement clearance levels (DLCL) from 40 µg/ft2 to 10 µg/ft2 for floors and from 250 µg/ft2 to 100 µg/ft2 for windowsills.
