Lead Law Update (FAQ Series): What is a “Lead Free” certification?

We are regularly receiving questions regarding the new Lead Law and have created a weekly “Frequently Asked Questions” (FAQ’s) forum for you as you desire to become more informed of the Lead Law and its complexity.

This week we are featuring a common question:

Question: What is a “Lead Free” certification?

Answer:   A “Lead Free” certification means that there is Zero lead anywhere in the house.  Absolutely no trace of lead in the property.

A “Lead Free” certification uses an XRF device (like a radar gun) and is used to test nearly every surface (walls, doors, baseboards, moldings,-anything that has been painted, etc.) of the property.  Although “Lead Free” has the advantage of a “lifetime certification” only properties that have been completely renovated down to the studs, will pass a “Lead Free” test. 

The advantage of “Lead Free” is that if your property passes, the certification is valid for the lifetime of the property.
